The ultimate 13 bedding elements. How to dress the perfect bed.

We at Signal Labels have the majority of our clients from the bedding textile industry. And the products we supply labels for are lying on the bed in every home. But does really everyone know all the elements that a good dressed bed consists of?
Here we have listed all the pieces that you would need in order to feel comfortable in your bed.



1. BED SKIRT / DUST RUFFLE
This is a decorative element that goes beneath the mattress, on top of the box-spring. You can find it with decking fabric or just the skirt that you can attach on your bed frame.
You can choose your pattern to math the curtains or other element in your bedroom.


2. MATTRESS
The core element of the bed, the mattress is something that you have to choose carefully according your sleep habits and your budget.

3. MATTRESS PROTECTOR / MATTRESS PAD / TOPPER
It has many functions to protect the mattress from tear, spill, or wear; to protect you form allergens such as dust mites; It adds comfort as provides extra padding and warmth, It helps keeping the bottom sheet in place.
The materials include cotton, wool, and latex, which have different look and feel. They are usually liquid resistant and washable.


4. BOTTOM SHEET / FITTED SHEET / FLAT SHEET
Bottom sheet is usually part of a sheet set that are designed to match.
The fitted option is with elastic edges and fits the particular size of the mattress. You need to consider also the depth so the pockets can cover the whole mattress. This helps the sheet to stay in place. For a bottom sheet you can also use a flat option and tuck it underneath the matters however this will be uncomfortable when changing sheets.


5. TOP SHEET / FLAT SHEET / DUVET COVER
This is the part of the sheet set that goes on top of you and before the duvet or the blanket.
Depending on the preferences you can use a flat sheet and just put it on the wrong side up so the pattern shows when you fold it over the blanket
Another type is the Duvet cover or the blanket cover which is simply a case to protect your duvet.

6. DUVET / CONFORTER
Duvet is the piece that provide warmth. It does usually have a fill and is made of different materials. We will post a separate article of a buying guide for duvets.

7. BLANKET
These are covers added above the top flat sheet for keeping you warm. They have the same purpose as the duvets and the comforters just they are made of thicker material rather that fill.
You choose them according the seasons with different thickness and fill.
The blankets are usually larger than the duvet and you can tuck them under the mattress.


8. PILLOWS
We have posted separate article of how to choose the right sleeping pillow for you. Here we are listing the standard set of pillows for a full queen size bed:
Euro Pillows - 26/26inch. The maximum you can add to your bed is 3 pieces.
King Pillows - 20/36inch. 2 pieces.
Standard Pillows / Sleeping Pillows - 20/30inch. 2pieces
Accent Pillows / Decorative Pillows - the sizes vary usually 18/18inch or 16/16inch. You can add 2 or 3 to your king size bed. The Boudoir Pillow is usually with size 12/16inch
Neck-roll Pillow - has cylinder form with size 6.5/13inch

9. PILLOW PROTECTOR
The pillow protector is used to cover your sleeping pillows and prolong their life and keeps them clean. They are usually a zipped cases and are washable.


10. PILLOW CASE
Could be part of your bed sheet set or bought separately to use as a top cover for your pillows. They are also e decorative piece for your bed as you can choose an accent with the desired patterns. The sizes of course are determined by the size of the pillow.


11. PILLOW SHAM
Is a decorative pillow cover with flanged edges for elegant look. You can choose a sham cover for either type of pillow on your bed however it looks better of only part of them are using it as otherwise it will be overdone.


12. COVERLET / QUILT
Coverlets are a decorative pieces that are spread on the bed but don’t cover the pillows. They are consisting of one layer fabric that is stitched in matelassé pattern which gives a nice finish texture. They tend to be matched with the Euro sized pillow shams. The Quilts are intended for the same purpose but they are usually made of two layers which are stitched together (quilt).


13. BED SPREAD / THROW / BED SCARF
These are decorative pieces that cover your bed. Traditionally it goes to the floor and is used to cover your sheets completely or just placed up to the pillows. They can be quilted, frilled, think, thick, it all depends on the styling and your preferences.
